Open AI may be considering an ad model, but advertising in ChatGPT is not expected shortly.
Open AI has no plans to include ads in its products, such as ChatGPT and ChatGPT search. There are no current developments in that direction, as introducing ads to its AI search engine in the future is not possible.
What Open AI Says about Chatgpt Ads
Sarah Friar, Chief Financial Officer of OpenAI, stated that;
Our current business is experiencing rapid growth, and we see opportunities within our existing business models. While we are open to considering revenue streams in the future, we are actively pursuing activities this time.
Although Open AI has not committed to an advertising model, Sarah Friar hinted that it might eventually consider advertising, stating that it would be “thoughtful about when and where” to implement it. Additionally, Open AI has added formal advertising professionals from firms like Google, Meta, and others.
Altman’s Stance on Chatgpt Ads
CEO Sam Altmans remains critical about advertisement, describing it as a “momentary industry” during an interview this year. Sam Altmans shared his dislike for ads by saying:
“I don’t like ads as a personal choice. They were necessary for the internet to grow, but it’s a temporary industry. Now, the world is wealthier, and I like that people pay for ChatGPT, knowing the answers aren’t influenced by advertisers.”
- He admitted there might be ways to incorporate advertising or monetization in AI models without bias, saying, “I’m sure there’s a fair way to include ads or work within transactions without being biased.” However, he worries about AI becoming too commercialized: “It is easy to think about a dystopian future where ChatGPT suggests products or vacation spots based on ads instead of giving unbiased answers.“
- He emphasized his preferences for a simple, user-funded business model, saying, “I like our simple business model; I know I am not the product, and I’m paying. That’s how it works. He pointed out that he does not enjoy using ad-supported platforms like Twitter, Facebook, or Google. He said, “When I use the ad-supported products, I don’t love it. And I think it is making it worse, especially in a world with AI.” He prefers the transparency and integrity of a model where users pay directly for the services.
OpenAI’s new search product is expanding and growing very fast, and if this momentum continues, then ChatGPT could eventually challenge Google. However, no search engine has yet succeeded in breaking the habit of people using Google Search.
Like Altman, many others also think that Google and other platforms may suffer due to “enshitification” in which the ad revenue is prioritized over user experience and this results in less enjoyable experience for users.
Though Open AI does not have a significant search share, Chat GPT’s traffic is increasing . If it continues, advertisers may target its users and Open AI might watch Perplexity’s ad model for insights.
